Taco Fest is my Super Bowl. 30+ taco vendors, live music, lucha libre wrestling, tequila tasting, and SO. MANY. TACOS.

Is it crowded? Yes. Is it hot? Also yes. Do I go every year anyway? OBVIOUSLY.

What Is Taco Fest OC?

Taco Fest is exactly what it sounds like: a massive festival celebrating tacos in all their glory. Dozens of vendors from across Southern California bring their best tacos, and you eat your way through them while enjoying live music and entertainment.

You'll find:

  • 30-40 taco vendors (restaurants, food trucks, pop-ups)
  • Every taco style imaginable (carne asada, al pastor, birria, fish, vegan, fusion)
  • Tequila tasting and margarita bars
  • Craft beer garden
  • Live bands and DJs
  • Lucha libre wrestling (Mexican masked wrestling โ€” it's AMAZING)
  • Vendor booths with hot sauce, merch, and taco swag

It's loud, chaotic, delicious, and very, very crowded. Come prepared.

When & Where Does It Happen?

Taco Fest typically happens in September (exact date varies year to year). The location rotates but is usually in Santa Ana or Irvine at a large outdoor venue.

Event hours:

  • Usually 12 PM - 8 PM (one day event)
  • Gates open at noon
  • Peak crowds: 2 PM - 6 PM

Check the official Taco Fest website for the exact 2026 location and date.

General Admission vs. VIP: Which Ticket?

This is THE most important decision you'll make.

General Admission ($30-$40):

  • Pros: Cheaper, full access to vendors and entertainment
  • Cons: LONG lines (30-60 min waits at popular vendors), crowded, no shade, pay-per-taco
  • Best for: Budget-conscious, patient people, small groups

VIP ($75-$100):

  • Pros: Separate VIP entrance, shorter lines, shaded seating area, complimentary tastings, premium tequila access
  • Cons: Expensive, still some lines, tacos not included (you still pay per taco)
  • Best for: People who hate waiting, large groups, tequila lovers

Luna's take:

If you can afford it, VIP is 100% worth it. The shorter lines alone save you HOURS. Plus the shaded seating area is a lifesaver when it's 90 degrees and you need a break.

General admission is fine if you're patient and strategic (see tips below), but you'll spend half the day in line.

How Does Taco Tasting Work?

Admission gets you INTO the festival. Tacos are sold separately.

Pricing:

  • Individual tacos: $3-$6 each
  • Most vendors sell 1, 2, or 3-taco plates
  • Drinks (beer, margaritas, agua fresca): $8-$15

You'll need cash or card. Most vendors take both, but cash lines are often faster.

How many tacos should you plan for?

Average person eats 6-10 tacos over the course of the festival. Budget $30-$60 for tacos + $20-$40 for drinks. Total spend: $50-$100+ per person beyond admission.

Best Taco Strategy

Don't just wander aimlessly. You'll waste time and miss the good stuff. Here's the game plan:

1. Scout first, eat second: When you arrive, do a lap of the entire festival. Check out all the vendors, see what looks good, note the line lengths.

2. Hit the popular vendors EARLY: Birria and al pastor spots get SLAMMED. Go there first (12-1 PM) before lines explode.

3. Pace yourself: Don't get 3 tacos from the first vendor. Get 1-2, move on, try variety.

4. Avoid the lines at peak hours: 2-4 PM is CHAOS. Use that time to grab drinks, watch lucha libre, or take a break.

5. Return to favorites at the end: If you find a vendor you love, hit them again around 6-7 PM when lines die down.

6. Share with friends: Go in a group, everyone orders different tacos, share everything. More variety, less waste.

Must-Try Taco Styles

You'll see EVERY type of taco imaginable. Here's what to prioritize:

Classic must-tries:

  • Carne asada: Grilled steak, the OG. Judge every vendor by their carne asada.
  • Al pastor: Marinated pork, pineapple, perfection.
  • Birria: Slow-cooked beef, served with consommรฉ for dipping. PEAK taco.
  • Fish tacos: Baja-style fried or grilled. Always a solid choice.

Adventurous options:

  • Korean-Mexican fusion: Bulgogi tacos, kimchi salsa, etc.
  • Vegan tacos: Jackfruit, cauliflower, mushroom โ€” surprisingly good
  • Lengua (beef tongue): Don't knock it til you try it
  • Tacos dorados: Crispy fried tacos, crunchy goodness

Don't just stick to what you know. Taco Fest is the time to try new styles.

Lucha Libre Wrestling

One of the BEST parts of Taco Fest: live lucha libre matches.

Masked wrestlers in colorful outfits throwing each other around a ring while the crowd goes wild. It's theatrical, it's ridiculous, it's AMAZING.

Matches happen throughout the day. Check the schedule when you arrive and plan to catch at least one. It's pure entertainment.

Tequila & Margarita Situation

Multiple bars throughout the festival serve:

  • Margaritas (classic, flavored, frozen)
  • Tequila flights and tastings
  • Craft beer
  • Micheladas
  • Agua fresca and horchata (non-alcoholic)

VIP ticket holders get access to premium tequila tastings and a separate bar with shorter lines.

Pro tip: Alternate tacos and drinks. Don't drink on an empty stomach in 90-degree heat. You'll regret it.

What to Bring

Essentials:

  • Sunscreen and hat (you're outside for HOURS)
  • Comfortable shoes (you'll be standing/walking all day)
  • Cash AND card (some vendors prefer one over the other)
  • Portable phone charger
  • Light, breathable clothing (it gets HOT)
  • Small bag for your stuff (subject to search at entry)

Leave at home:

  • Large backpacks (not allowed)
  • Outside food/drinks (not allowed)
  • High expectations for cleanliness (it's a taco festival, embrace the mess)

Parking & Getting There

Parking depends on the venue, but it's ALWAYS a challenge.

Options:

  • On-site parking: $10-$20, fills up FAST
  • Nearby public lots: Similar price, short walk
  • Street parking: Free but limited (arrive early)
  • Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): Best option, especially if you're drinking

If you're driving, arrive right when gates open (noon) for easier parking. Leaving is a nightmare โ€” expect traffic.

Luna's Taco Fest Survival Tips

1. Go with a group: More fun, easier to share tacos and try variety.

2. Arrive right at noon: Beat the crowds, hit popular vendors first.

3. Upgrade to VIP if you can afford it: The shorter lines are worth every penny.

4. Bring stretchy pants: You're eating 8+ tacos. Plan accordingly.

5. Stay hydrated: Drink water between margaritas. Trust me.

6. Don't fill up at the first vendor: Pace yourself, there's so much to try.

7. Catch a lucha libre match: Schedule at least 20 minutes to watch. It's worth it.

8. Embrace the chaos: It's crowded, it's hot, it's messy. That's part of the experience.

Where to Stay Nearby

If you're making a weekend of it (or don't want to drive home after tequila tastings):

  • Santa Ana area: Multiple hotels near typical Taco Fest venues
  • Irvine hotels: If the festival is at the Orange County Great Park
  • Anaheim: Tons of hotels, short drive to most OC venues
